A West Nottinghamshire College photography tutor has been selected to exhibit his work at a prestigious venue in Birmingham next month.

Richard Edwards, who teaches on a range of digital photography courses in the community, has secured a place at an exhibition at The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA).

In the RBSA’s 200-year history, photography has rarely been exhibited, with the last exhibition being over 80 years ago. From 10 September to 3 October Richard will be exhibiting a black and white image under the ‘urban living’ theme.

His digital image was taken at 4.30 one rainy morning and shows the architecture around Birmingham’s canal basin and features a lady jogging by.

Richard, who originally hails from Birmingham, said: “That morning it was torrential rain but the effects I’ve achieved on the photograph are very atmospheric. There’s a lot of reflection going on with the rain on the floor and reflecting off the canal.

“I wanted to compare the old with the new. I compared the old buildings with the new past-time of jogging. The timing of the lady jogging by was perfect and I was very pleased with the outcome of the shot.”

Richard is now in the process of getting his photograph printed to size on archival paper and is delighted to have been selected to feature at the exhibition.

He said: “I was absolutely wowed when I discovered I’d been chosen. There will be fifty other photographers’ work from across the world alongside mine. It’s done wonders for my confidence. Afterall, they say you’re only as good as your last photograph.”

Richard’s preference is working on high-end portraiture and fine art digital-based photography. But his first experiences of using a camera go way back.

He said: “Photography really is part of my life. My most treasured possession is an image of my mum and dad which I remember taking when I was nine. Even today, I look at it and still get a buzz and remember the little box camera I took it on.”
