College to encourage students to stub it out

Students at West Nottinghamshire College will be getting advice and support to help kick the smoking habit.

The health, welfare and safeguarding team will be getting involved in one of the UK’s most successful annual health campaigns on Wednesday (9 March) by staging events at the various college campuses, to support students who want to quit smoking.

The advisers will be available for people to get advice, support and guidance on giving up smoking and learners will be provided with extra support and help through agencies such as the NHS ‘New Leaf’ service.

Student advisers will be touring the college’s campuses at Derby Road, Chesterfield Road, Sovereign Way and The Academy on Regent Street, Mansfield as well as the Construction and Logistics Skills Academy in Kirkby-in-Ashfield.

Student adviser for wellbeing, Kirsty Betts, said: “Our support to students wanting to stop smoking reaches much wider than just No Smoking Day.  Learners can book in for confidential support and guidance with us at any time both during and after quitting smoking.

“We shall be promoting the wider health benefits of stopping smoking to our students.  If we can encourage them to give up when they are young, they will lead healthier, longer lives."
