Computing student wins regional skills competition
A West Nottinghamshire College computing student is celebrating after winning a regional IT competition.
Su Ket Wong was entered into the WorldSkills UK Microsoft IT Technician competition last academic year.
He beat off rivals from other East Midlands’ colleges at the regional heats, held on 8 April at Luton’s Barnfield College.
The 23-year-old, from Kirkby-in-Ashfield, will now compete in the national finals in Scotland in May.
Sue Ket, who is studying for a Foundation Degree in Communication and Networking Technologies, in addition to the part-time Cisco networking course, said: “The competition went really well and I received good feedback from the judges. I was quite confident throughout and I’m looking forward to doing my best at the national finals.
“I couldn’t have done this without the support from my tutors in computer science. I’ve learnt such a lot from them during my four years at college.”
Curriculum manager for computer science, Piers Ching, said: “Su Ket performed excellently in a very competitive field. He put into practice everything he’s learnt at college, from building computers and installing software to connecting networks and configuring hard drives.
“We’re really proud of his success and if his performance in Luton is anything to go by, he’ll do brilliantly in the national finals.”
Managed by WorldSkills UK, the competitions encourage young people and adults across the country to excel in their vocational area to recognise those who have developed exceptional skills.
WorldSkills UK national finalists may be shortlisted for the team that goes on to represent the UK at the next WorldSkills Competition, which is the biggest international skills competition in the world.
