Music and movement at college nursery

Children at a college nursery are learning co-ordination skills, thanks to a dance and exercise programme designed by personal training students.

Weekly ‘Boogying Babies and Little Movers’ sessions are being delivered to pre-school children at Butterflies Day Nursery – part of Vision West Notts – by Natalie Cantrell, Jodi Duncan and Kelly Cooper.

Half-hour dance and exercise classes at the nursery – which was recently graded outstanding by Ofsted – are boosting the children’s social skills and self-confidence while equipping the students with the skills to deliver tailored training programmes.

Natalie, 17, Jodie, 20, and Kelly, 29,  who are studying for the Certificate in Personal Training, have incorporated children’s party music into the classes – which are taking place over six weeks – to make them fun for the tots, who are aged three to five years.

Kelly, from Somercotes, who has a three-year-old son, said: “The children are really enjoying themselves at these fun and friendly classes.  We’re delighted to be helping them develop their co-ordination skills and confidence and channel their boundless energy into healthy exercise.

“Eventually I’d like to work in the health and fitness industry engaging with children and young mums.”
