College launches new university-level courses

West Nottinghamshire College has announced a new range of higher education courses.

It is introducing five new foundation degrees and a further full honours ‘top-up’ degree in a drive to bring affordable university-level study to local communities.

These include foundation degrees in Sport and Exercise Science and Sport Coaching and Development, which prepare students for a range of careers in the industry; and in Criminal Justice (Human Rights) for those seeking employment with the police, Crown Prosecution Service, probation and prison services, or in social work and youth offending.

It will also deliver new foundation degrees in Business Management and Professional Administration; ensuring graduates are qualified for management, marketing and finance positions in the public, private and voluntary sectors.

Meanwhile, the addition of a one-year top-up degree in Sport Studies means people can gain their full honours degree at college instead of completing their final year at university. This complements the BA honours degree in Business and Management already run by the college.

The foundation degrees are two-year programmes, while the full honours top-up awards last for one year.  Starting in September, they all cost £5,500 per year.  This comes as many universities across the country prepare to charge the maximum £9,000-a-year tuition fee.  Fees are not paid up front – only when graduates earn more than £21,000-a-year.

Eleanor Taylor, head of higher education, said: “The college is committed to providing local communities with access to affordable higher education to prepare people for a competitive job market or enhance their career prospects.

“The addition of another full honours top-up degree is particularly welcome; meaning students can complete their studies with us instead of having to move away from home to attend university.”

The college offers 22 university-level courses including HNCs, HNDs, foundation degrees and two full honours top-up degrees.
