Curtain up for Mansfield’s latest performance venue

Mansfield’s newest addition to the performing arts scene is set to open its doors to the public.

The Create Theatre, based at Vision West Nottinghamshire College, unveils its first-ever programme on Wednesday 19 September with an evening of live entertainment.

Dignitaries, arts groups and members of the public will be treated to acts by touring theatre companies Random Acts, Arletty Theatre, Threesome Theatre and its own performing arts students, as well as having a chance to look behind-the-scenes at the 150-seat venue.

The launch event, which runs from 6.30-9pm, also features Heart and Music – a cabaret style revue of songs from modern musicals – by locally-based Debut Theatre Company.

The theatre’s inaugural programme boasts a wide range of productions including comedy, drama, story-telling, contemporary and musical performances running until December and preparations are already underway for Spring 2013.

Productions will be provided by the college’s own media, music and performance students, as well as local touring companies, who are being urged to hire the facilities and bring their shows to Mansfield for the first time.

Retro radio recreation Wireless Times by Random Acts, a contemporary play Bones by Fifth Word Theatre Arts, pianist Julian Clef who will be joined by soloists from Mansfield’s internationally-renowned choir Cantamus and Christmas Showcase by the college performing arts students are just some of the shows lined up over the coming months.

Create Theatre co-ordinator Adam Pownall, said: “There’s a great mix of performances planned for our first season and we’re looking forward to welcoming some exciting local, regional and national companies, as well as showcasing the talents of our own students.

“Create Theatre is not just about providing a platform for some of the best touring theatre out there, it is also about re-energising the culture and arts scene in Nottinghamshire.

“By working in partnership with a range of companies, and offering a purpose-built space for aspiring performers, we’re looking forward to making theatre more accessible for our local communities.”

The theatre is set within the £5m Create building, which opened in September 2011 for media, music and performing arts students as part of a £24m redevelopment of the Derby Road campus.
