Getting work-ready at West Notts

Students on university-level courses at West Nottinghamshire College discovered exactly what employers want from new recruits at a specialist evening this week.

Foundation degree students on Business Management and Professional Administration programmes attended the second annual employer forum at the college’s Ransom Hall site on Tuesday (12 February) when they welcomed representatives from private and public sector organisations.

Students posed questions about graduate employability to employers including Nottinghamshire Police, JobCentre Plus and local entrepreneur Ben Snowden, managing director of Drive, Mansfield-based driver management and corporate marketing solutions company.

Employers gave students expert advice about how to prepare themselves for applying for jobs once they graduate from the college as well as answering queries during a question and answer session.

John Hammond from Nottinghamshire Police opened the session with a talk on graduate and undergraduate progression.

The event follows on from the higher education team’s ‘Futures Fortnight’ in January which provided students with a range of activities with an employability focus.

Higher education business tutor Stephanie Wilkinson said: “The employer forum gave our students a great opportunity to meet with some high profile business leaders.

“Not only do we strive to give our students the best qualifications at the college but we also ensure that they receive the best advice on what makes a graduate employable.  In a competitive job market it’s essential to have the right attitude to work as well as the right skills.”
