Music to students' ears
Professional industry advice was music to students’ ears yesterday (8 October) as they learnt about the benefits of joining the Musicians’ Union (MU).

More than 30 students, who are studying on music courses at West Nottinghamshire College’s Derby Road campus, welcomed Lyndsey Hardiman from the Midlands regional office of the union.
The MU is a globally-respected organisation which represents over 30,000 musicians working in all sectors of the music business.
Students from the Level 2 and 3 Music and Level 3 Music Technology programmes joined university-level students from the HND Music and the BA (Hons) Applied Studies in Music, to learn about insurance coverage of their instruments and equipment as well as public liability insurance when they join the union.
Lyndsey also highlighted how, by joining the union, members can get legal advice on issues such as recording, song-writing, touring and licensing. Students were able to complete an application to be a member of the MU.
Twenty-year-old HND Music student, and singer and songwriter, Patrick Cunningham, said: “I already knew a bit about the MU as I perform around the country and sometimes need contract insurance.
“It’s a good organisation to be part of to help support you in the music business and being a member has a multitude of benefits.”
