Students to hit litter hard

“We’re not going to take it anymore”, are the words being spoken by students at West Nottinghamshire College – but for a very good reason.

  • SU communications officer Ashleigh Trolley and president Will Jordan launching the anti-litter campaign at West Notts College

The Students’ Union (SU) is launching a college-wide crackdown on litter campaign by that same name this week.  Students and staff are being encouraged to be more aware of litter, how it is disposed of and the cleanliness of the college campuses.

Today (15 October), Will Jordan, president of the SU joined campus attendants at the Derby Road campus to observe their daily cleaning tasks which ensures the college is kept clean and tidy. Will also obtained hourly video footage via a ‘Go-Pro’ head-cam to monitor the cleanliness of the campus in one day.

Over 200 bags of rubbish per day are collected from bins and dining areas at the Derby Road campus as well as 21 bags of rubbish gathered from outside the gates on Nottingham Road and Derby Road by campus attendants.

Will said: “The launch of the campaign is aimed at both students and staff to recognise that it’s everyone’s responsibility to keep the college and surrounding areas clean – not just the housekeeping staff and campus attendants.

“It’s all too easy to leave an empty wrapper on a table, to drop chewing gum or to walk past something dropped on the floor, but with thousands of students passing through the college each day, things would get very messy if we were all careless, so it’s about us all respecting our environment and taking extra care to be tidy.”

In the coming weeks, the SU will be sending the ‘Green Army’ out into the locality. The army will consist of student volunteers who will be doing a weekly litter pick starting at the Derby Road campus and heading down Nottingham Road – in a bid to help keep this busy stretch of road looking its best.
