Rosanna wins regional care cook competition for 2nd year running

West Nottinghamshire College supervisory and hospitality student Rosanna Stanforth has scooped the regional National Care Cook Competition prize for the second year running.

Rosanna, who works as a cook at Jubilee Court residential care home and day centre in Hucknall, was delighted at winning the Nottinghamshire competitions, run by the National Association of Care Catering (NACC).

She said: “I am so pleased to have won this for the second year running.  I am really going to try my best at the Birmingham finals this summer and aim to get as much practice in between now and then.”

Rosanna’s sweet and sour fish dish and braised rice was a real hit with the judges. She walked away with a prize of professional catering knives and is hoping to land the £500 first prize on 9th July at the Birmingham College of Food and Technology.

Karen Oliver, the regional chair for the NACC, said: “The depth of skill in the care industry has been highlighted today with our competitors bringing the skills they utilise everyday in the workplace to the competitive arena.

“As the government puts its Improving Nutritional Care Action Plan into place, the four regional finalists including Rosanna are an example of the quality of staff employed across Britain in care establishments. They should be the benchmark for which every establishment must aim for, as we all aim to improve nutrition for those in our care.”

The eight cooks who entered the regional competitions - three of who are students at West Nottinghamshire College - all work in the social care environment at care homes and day centres for Nottinghamshire County Council.

Competition rules stated that the menu had to be a two-course, nutritionally-balanced meal designed for the people they cater for in the care setting.  Competitors had to cater for four people with a budget of just £5.20.  One dish from each course was presented in competition style and the others presented as they would be in the care establishment.

The popular Number 19 brasserie and professional kitchens at West Nottinghamshire College was the venue for the NACC Nottinghamshire regional competition - held on 27th April - which saw College staff as well as local catering representatives judging the entrants’ dishes.
