From West Notts to New York

Travel and tourism students from West Nottinghamshire College shone their brightest on stage yesterday for their favourite charity and a chance to travel overseas.

Travel and tourism students dressed ready for their Winter Wonderland talent show

First and second year learners on the level three travel and tourism programmes put on a Christmas talent show for their peers to raise cash for the Mercedes Curnow Foundation which promotes the awareness of cervical cancer, as well as helping to fund their residential trip to New York in 2015.

The end of term event, which featured dancing, singing, comedy acts and obscure talents, all with the theme of Winter Wonderland, took place at the college’s Derby Road campus today (18 December).

Every year students are required to organise travel, accommodation and activities at a range of overseas destinations as part of their tourism industry studies.  Previous trips have included a cruise to The Canaries, a visit to Barcelona and also Cyprus.

Travel and tourism programme area leader Sarah Heeley said: “It really has been amazing. Every single student who has helped to organise this event has put such enthusiasm into it. From organising the raffle prizes, to putting creative costumes and stage acts together, as well as braving a sponsored leg wax, there’s been a sense of team spirit and pride from all.

“We are set to raise over £600 through this event which will be shared between the charity and putting towards the students’ trip to New York in the New Year. Everybody should be truly proud of their efforts.”
