Keeping ahead with business through industry week

An industrious start to the New Year has seen students at West Nottinghamshire College welcome specialists from the hairdressing, beauty therapy and spa industries.

A week-long series of masterclasses, team building and product knowledge sessions have ensured that students who train in the college’s Revive salons and spa are up-to-date with the latest working practices and products.

Hairdressing students have benefited from specialist updates from TONI&GUY stylists as well as getting into the competitive spirit with a ‘barber battle’ competition which saw them creating a free-style choice of men’s haircuts and finishes.

They also pitted their wits against other students during a Dragon’s Den-style competition aimed at promoting hair products. Students also had the opportunity to practice their skills in the commercial salons in avant garde and bridal hairstyling workshops.

Meanwhile, trainee beauty therapists met with motivational speakers and experts from the beauty industry. They put their creative skills to practice with nail art, hopi ear candle, spray tan and henna decoration workshops.

Curriculum manager Sarah Morley said: “Industry week is designed with the students’ futures in mind. It helps them to discover the vast range of careers that their skills could take them towards and they get to meet people working in those areas that they aspire to be in themselves.

“I’ve seen lots of students taking confident steps to having a go at things they haven’t tried before. Raising their confidence like this will help to encourage them when it comes to applying for jobs after their studies.”
