Technology students press ‘restart’ to new term

A new term at West Nottinghamshire College means new experiences and computer science students discovered these during a day trip to the home of video-gaming.

  • Adam Lake and Nathan Hibbert playing street fighter on an old Super Nintendo Entertainment System
  • Owen Eves creating a controller out of potatoes and a banana to control a game on Makey Makey
  • Playing on a range of old arcade games

Second year learners on the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT were welcomed back to the world of technology with an induction and team building day at GameCity – The National Videogame Arcade, based in Nottingham.

The students, who are studying both networking and system support and software development, had the chance to take part in a masterclass session which taught them creative and fun ways to interact with their computers using everyday objects to replace the keyboards and mice.

Student were also involved in a masterclass session in computer game-making.

Groups got to try out the retro video games in preparation for a forthcoming class project in which they will be expected to devise their own retro game, to be showcased at their end of year show next summer.

Software development student Catherine Rhodes, 18, said: “I really enjoyed the trip to GameCity as it showed us just how video games have changed over time and it was fun to be able to play all the games, old and new.”
