Fitness for everyone encouraged at international celebration

Getting active with differences in mind was celebrated at West Nottinghamshire College.

  • Seated table tennis was one of the games enjoyed
  • International Day of Persons with Disabilities

A mini Paralympics event took place at the college’s Derby Road campus on Friday (2 December) in celebration of the United Nations’ International Day of Persons with Disabilities (3 December).

An afternoon of seated table tennis and basketball, boccia, chairobics and seated ten pin bowling was set up in the college’s Students’ Union building by the sport development team and enjoyed by students from across the college.

Games were created with physical limitations in mind, and both able and less able students got together to enjoy the games with a difference.

College sport maker Rob Pearce said: “Today proved a great chance to get everybody active. Students proved that anyone can get involved in physical games and there were individuals who were less physically able joining in with the tailored games.

“It also showed those who are fully active how to empathise with the disabled and our sports students were able to learn how to cater for clients with disabilities to see what games can be adapted when they are leading on setting sports tasks.”
