Pendragon pilot programme is thriving

Apprentices at one of the country’s top motor retailers have celebrated the first year of success on a tailor-made study programme through West Nottinghamshire College’s engineering curriculum.

  • Pendragon students celebrate with programme area leader Jeremy Koekomoer
  • Every student was presented with a certificate to recognise the completion of year one of study
  • Pendragon’s group talent leader Nick Burnside

The apprentice training scheme dubbed the ‘Pendragon Passport’, which is delivered at the college’s state-of-the-art Engineering Innovation Centre in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, began in 2016 to upskill vehicle technicians working for Pendragon PLC throughout the UK.

The three-year programme is now a third of the way through and seven student technicians celebrated achieving the first part of their qualification on Tuesday 7 November, earning them the QCF Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Competence Diploma.

The apprentices attend the college’s engineering workshops on a block-release basis which equates to a full, intensive week of college training every six to eight weeks. They learn about electrical and electronic technology and a range of health and safety training as well as discovering about the legal aspects of the industry.

Certificates of achievement were presented by the college programme area leader Jeremy Koekomoer and Pendragon’s group talent leader Nick Burnside.

A second group of apprentices following the same programme will be looking to complete their first year of study in February 2018.

Jeremy said: “The apprentices have shown both their dedication and interest in the programme very early on and are clearly succeeding. We’re also delighted that the second group to enrol on this three-year programme are doing equally well.”

Mr Burnside said: “Learning and development is key to the success of our business, so it’s been great to see the journey of our team members over the last year on this programme. Thanks to the college team for their support and congratulations to our team members for completion of year one and to the future success of their programme.”
