A taste of university life at college
Teenagers are being offered a hands-on educational opportunity during the May half-term week at West Nottinghamshire College.

For young people currently in Year 12 or 13 (aged 17 or 18) the college’s Vision University Centre is opening its doors to offer taster sessions – to give people a feel for university-level study.
The free sessions will give an insight into a range of curriculum areas including health and social care, interactive media, music and children’s and young people’s services.
The first session is being held on Tuesday 29 May from 9.30-11.30am and looks at the cardiovascular system. People will be able to have a go at taking pulse and blood pressure as well as temperatures and peak flow.
On Wednesday (30 May) at 1-2pm students who are interested in enhancing their careers potential within the early years/teaching assistants/children and young people related setting will learn and explore how to effectively research and source subject specific materials.
The interactive session in a research environment will give attendees the opportunity to learn something new and to meet new people, visit the university-level centre and find out more about the two pathways available (early years or teaching assistant) on the FdA Children’s and Young People’s Services course.
Interactive media will also be hosting two sessions on Wednesday 30 May at 10am-12pm and 1-3pm. The art of games design and virtual reality will be looked at. Participants will create a games environment-landscape and terrain using 3D sculpting tools in Unity 3D software. Guests will then tour the virtual reality studio and will have the chance to experience a fully immersive VR experience.
On the same day the music department will be introducing guests to life in a recording studio. From 10am-12pm on 30 May, there will be the chance to set up a band and record sounds using analogue and digital technology in the professional studios with state-of-the-art equipment.
Learner recruitment manager Stephanie Hoult said: “The best way to get an idea of what university could be like is to come to experience it for yourself.
“We’ll be offering a tour of the university centre as well as the real-life HE lessons. People can sign on to as many sessions as they wish and it’s all free.
“This experience will be specially tailored for students who are currently in sixth form and aged 17 to 18 and want a taste of how life at university could be for them.”
