On Thursday 18 May second year Level 3 BTEC Travel and Tourism learners, pulled out all the stops and organised the annual extravaganza which concentrates on employment and opportunities in the tourism sector.

It welcomed representatives from Hilton Hotels, Virgin Atlantic, the University of Derby, Norwegian Airlines, Thomas Cook and many more.

Guest speakers addressed over 60 travel and tourism students in the university centre’s lecture theatre, covering subjects such as their career journeys, the range of job roles within their companies, and how to apply for vacancies successfully.

During the event, students raised funds and clothing for Shelter, the organisation which helps millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness through our advice, support and legal services.

The careers fair was open to all other travel and tourism learners at the college to help them choose their study and career pathway in this varied sector. A range of advice about travel companies and tourist attractions was available at the information stand which students had prepared in detail.

Level 3 student Rianna Stevenson was one of the group members who organised the event. She said: “We worked in groups to co-ordinate this event, covering administration, marketing and promotions, finance, fundraising and health and safety.

“It was a great event to organise as it’s given us all ideas about the real world and the kind of job opportunities out there and how to progress in this industry. To meet individuals who work for some of the top companies was great and to hear their stories of success was inspiring.

“After college I’m looking to gain employment possibly in the events or hotel industry. After listening to our guest speakers I think the hotel industry is appealing to me the most.”
