An evening of pride and celebration for computer scientists

Computer scientists have been celebrated in grand style at West Nottinghamshire College at their end of year celebration event.

More than 30 students stepped up to the stage to collect awards watched by friends, family and tutors as trophies were handed out to those who have achieved greatness during the 2017/18 academic year.

Nineteen awards were handed out on Wednesday (13 June) to honour those students who have completed 100% attendance, along with special awards to students who have completed Level 2 and Level 3 computer science programmes.

The Student Volunteer Award went to Nathan Jones who has just completed the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT (Networking and Systems Support). Nathan is now going on to become the college’s president of the Students’ Union.

There was double the applause when Scott Cripps and Ebony Reed of the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT (Software Development) collected the Student Ambassador Award. Ebony also proudly scooped the Computer Science Extra Mile Award.

Outstanding Student of The Year awards were handed out to students from each programme, by head of school, Nikki Slack, earning each winner a glass trophy and certificate.

A very special award has been created this year in honour of Alex Davidson. Alex was a student on the OCR Level 2 Extended Certificate in IT. Hard-working Alex had dreams of progressing to Higher Education and then working for the police force within IT.

Earlier this year Alex sadly passed away following a short illness. It was decided by the computer science team to name an award in Alex’s honour.

The Alex Davidson Award for Dedication to Progression in Education went to Jack Wood who is currently studying the Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT (Networking and System Support). Alex’s parents Lisa and John together with his sister Abbie, came in to present the award to Jack in recognition of his efforts in his studies and progression to the HNC in Computing, which he begins in September.

Computer science curriculum manager Trudi Dean said: “There’s nothing that makes me prouder than congratulating and rewarding the hard work, intuition and dedication shown by our students.

“The celebration event was the perfect way to recognise everyone’s efforts together and I was humbled to welcome Alex Davidson’s family to both remember a well-liked and popular young man and to present Jack Wood with the memorial award.”
