A world of health at college

Young people at Vision West Notts will be learning how to remain fit and healthy into their old age through a series of events next week (27-30 March).

The college’s student health and welfare team have organised activities across all college sites to celebrate World Health Day with the theme of ageing and health.

World Health Day is a global campaign which focuses on a single health challenge with global impact each year.  This year World Health Day takes place on 7 April, but students are getting health aware a week early – in the lead up to their Easter break.

Students are being invited to the World Health stands to discover more about healthy eating and exercise, safer sex and the effects that drugs and alcohol can have on health and life expectancy.  Representatives from New Leaf and Nottinghamshire County PCT will be on hand to offer advice on smoking cessation.

There will be the chance for students to try healthy smoothies and fruit as well as challenge each other’s fitness levels on the Wii Fit game.  There will be a number of free gym passes being given away throughout the week for students to visit Mansfield’s DW Sports Fitness.

Student adviser Kirsty Betts said: “It’s important that young people recognise that the way they live their lives today will affect their health in later years.  If we can help to encourage them to introduce a little exercise and adopt a healthier lifestyle now, then they can add years on to their lives.”
