Cash help for hospice
Kind-hearted students from West Nottinghamshire College’s lifestyle academy will be handing over a bumper cheque to a children’s hospice on Monday (14 May).
The students, who are on courses in hospitality and travel and tourism, have raised £688 through a number of fundraising initiatives to help Sheffield-based Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice create a room for teenagers using the centre.
Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice offers care and support to children and young adults with a shortened life expectancy both in their own homes and at the hospice.
Catering and hospitality students raised £210 through selling bread, pasta, hotdogs and cakes in the college’s Number 19 Brasserie, while students in travel and tourism raised £428 through sponsored fancy dress, cake sales and selling raffle tickets.
The college’s newly-formed enterprise team of students raised an additional £50 through sales of their ‘Forest Ferret’ brand of jams and preserves.
Students will welcome Andrea Hudson, Bluebell Wood’s area fundraiser for Mansfield and Derbyshire to hand over the cheque to help fund the creation of a room for terminally-ill teenagers.
The hospice became the students’ charity of choice for fundraising after being inspired by tutor Lynne Booth who, three years ago, did a coast to coast cycle ride to raise funds for Bluebell Wood.
Lynne said: “Some of our students didn’t realise that such places existed for people who are their age and younger and I was quite touched at how interested they were in raising funds to help those who are terminally-ill.”
“So much effort has been put into raising as much money as possible for the hospice and the students have been very creative with their ideas. We’ve had great support from travel and tourism tutor Leigh-Anne Purdon whose students have been equally enthusiastic with their money making ideas.”
