Schools academy praise outstanding students
Students aged between 14 and 17 took to the stage this week (23 May) to collect certificates of achievement to recognise their outstanding contribution on courses within the schools academy at West Nottinghamshire College.
Principal and chief executive Asha Khemka OBE presented certificates to 25 learners who attend college one day per week from their home schools in the Mansfield and Ashfield areas and have gone on to achieve success on a wide-range of courses giving them a broad curriculum and an insight into the world of work.
The schools academy offers courses that some local schools would have difficulty in providing on their own premises. These courses are aimed at students who would benefit from a practical learning environment, and those who are not fully engaged in learning or have additional needs.
Students from the ‘new diplomas’ also collected certificates of achievement last night. The college delivers several new diplomas in partnership with Mansfield and Ashfield schools over its many sites including hair and beauty studies, IT, construction, engineering, society health and development.
The principal’s student of the year award was given to construction first diploma student Callum Stacey, 16, for his hard work, mature attitude to learning and desire to succeed on his chosen course.
Schools academy team leader Mark Firth said: “Our celebration event is a great opportunity at the end of the year to recognise not only the academic and vocational progress made by the students, but also the improvement to their self-esteem and confidence.
“We’re particularly proud to see so many schools academy learners progress to full-time college programmes after they leave school.”
