Second success for Marie

West Nottinghamshire College’s Students’ Union has revealed its new president after voting closed on Friday (25 May).

Taking the reins for the second year running is Marie Oakton who secured 811 votes from across the college. Running in the election campaign with Marie was 18-year-old counselling student Ashleigh Trolley, from Meden Vale, who got 447 votes.

More than 1,400 students voted in this year’s elections which is an increase of 149% on last year’s voters.

20-year-old Marie from Sutton-in-Ashfield will begin her second term as president next academic year and has many new ideas and initiatives to offer students

A jubilant Marie said: “I’m so happy to be the college’s SU president again.  I was more nervous this year than last year.

“I’ll be getting in touch with Mansfield’s MP Alan Meale to help with a campaign to make Mansfield a better place for young people and I’m going to be working hard on the college’s zero tolerance campaign to help students to understand and implement respect and equality and diversity across the college campuses.

“I would like to thank my friends Declan Searson, Amy Smith, Ashley Reed and Katie Wheeler who helped me with my election campaign as well as my dad who helped me with my marketing material.  I’d also like to say well done to Ashleigh and I’m looking forward to enrolling on a marketing course with her next term.”

Marie will be joined in the Students’ Union office by vice president Katie Wheeldon, Amy Smith - press officer, Declan Searson - site officer and Charlotte Wilson - equality and diversity officer.
